LEXINGTON, Kentucky — The Jockey Club has ruled that a racehorse known as Austrian Painter has been renamed Merrylegs after a review of a complaint that alleged it was a reference to Adolf Hitler. The horse’s name drew attention after winning his debut Monday at Horseshoe Indianapolis Racecourse. Hitler was born in Austria and was an artist before becoming the head of the Nazi Party in Germany. "The Registrar determined that the name is ineligible under Rule 6.F.9.d, which prohibits names that ‘are likely to be offensive or threatening based upon factors including, but not limited to, color, creed, disability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, politics or sexual orientation,’” the Jockey Club said in a statement announcing its decision. Owner and breeder Scott Herbertson said on social media it was a reference to Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and that his filly originally called New Order was named for his favorite band. New Order is also a term for the Nazis' plan for occupying Europe. The Jockey Club said that horse, a full sister to Merrylegs, had also been unnamed. "We take these matters seriously and appreciate that they were brought to our attention,” the Jockey Club said.

Nagoya, Japan — China's 13-year-old swimming prodigy Yu Zidi sealed a hat-trick of Asian Games titles on Wednesday, as North Korea won their first two golds thanks to their powerhouse women weightlifters. Towards the end of the fourth full day of action in Aichi-Nagoya, China were easily top of the medals table with 47 golds. Second were the hosts Japan on 15, with South Korea third with eight. The schoolgirl Yu will be remembered as one of the faces of the Games after her eye-popping exploits in the pool. If she maintains her current trajectory the teenager will be a major medal threat at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Yu, who turns 14 next month, powered to a dominant victory in the women's 400m individual medley in a Games-record 4min 28.56sec. It gave her a clean sweep from her three individual events, following victories in the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley, also in Games-record times. It was a reflection of China's dominance in the pool this week, winning 21 of the 28 golds so far. But for all her success, Yu says there is still room for improvement. "I gained a lot from these Asian Games but there were also some regrets," she said after the race. The teenager stood in wide-eyed amazement when a reporter suggested she had made it look easy. THE Alas Pilipinas men’s national volleyball team, bannered by Marck Espejo and Bryan Bagunas, arrived in Nagoya, Japan on Thursday for the 2026 Asian Games. Slated in Pool D, Team Philippines will be tested early as it faces South Korea for its first match at 12 p.m. on Sept. 27 at the Park Arena Komaki. The other two countries in the group are China and Chinese Taipei. In the 2022 edition of the Asian Games in China, the Philippines placed 13th in men’s volleyball. This time, Alas Pilipinas is looking to make the second round with the help of outside hitters Espejo and Bagunas. Now having the experience of playing in the FIVB World Championship where the Philippines made a breakthrough after winning against Egypt, Alas Pilipinas looks to make a mark in the Asian Games. The last time that the Filipinos reached the semifinals here was in 1958 when the Philippines placed fourth overall for its best finish in the Asian Games. In the 1962 Indonesia, 1966 Thailand, and 1974 Iran Games, the Philippines placed ninth, eighth, and sixth, respectively. Alas Pilipinas, ranked 114th in the world, needs to win at least two games in the group stage, as only the top two teams of each of the four pools will advance to the quarterfinal round. Facing steep odds in Pool D, Philippine coach Angiolino Frigoni of Italy needs to pull a huge rabbit off his hat to hurdle past higher ranked teams South Korea (25th), China (34th) and Chinese Taipei (55th). Aside from Espejo and Bagunas, Frigoni can also lean on outside hitter Jude Garcia and opposite spikers Leo Ordiales, and John Lirck Mendoza. The team’s middle blockets are Lloyd Josafat, Peng Taguibolos and Joshua Magalaman and the playmakers are Greg Augustus Luis Ancheta and Adi Villados. Josh Ybañez is the libero for the national team.
