Alas Pilipinas Women cruised to back-to-back sweep victories after blanking Mongolia, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20, in the classification round of the 2026 Asian Games women's volleyball on Monday in Japan.

MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas picked up its second consecutive win after taking down Mongolia in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20, in the classification round of the 2026 Asian Games on Monday night in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Philippine women’s national volleyball team was already out of medal contention but remained determined to finish strong and secure ninth place. Angel Canino proved to be a consistent scorer for Alas with 14 points, along with nine excellent digs, while Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen chipped in 12 and 11 markers, respectively. Alas dropped its earlier matches to defending champion China and a tall Kazakhstan squad in Pool B, forcing the nationals into the classification stage. The Philippines did not send a volleyball team to the 2022 Hangzhou Games, while the 2018 Jakarta squad placed eighth. In that 2018 campaign, the Philippines won only one of its seven games, with its sole victory coming against Hong Kong. Head coach Taka Minowa emphasized that this Asian Games stint is all about the squad's growth and progress. “If in the previous time they won only just one game, if we won twice that is already a win and an improvement for us,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone had no doubt that the Korean national team is capable of winning the 20th Asian Games men’s basketball gold in the Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Cone said he already had that conclusion somewhat the moment the Koreans manhandled the Filipinos by an average winning margin of 26.5 points in their two-game Hana Invitational Basketball Invitational in Suwon, South Korea, just a week before the opening of the Asiad men’s basketball. “I thought Korea was the favored team for the gold from the beginning and despite our loss to China,” Cone told the Manila Times, just a day after Korea turned back host Japan, 67-57 on Sunday to win its first Asian Games men’s gold in 14 years. Cone and Gilas, backed by PBA stars, failed to defend the country’s Asiad basketball title following its embarrassing 105-61 defeat at the hands of mighty China at the close of the group stage. Many thought that China was a cinch to rule the basketball tournament this time after annihilating its opponents in the group stage behind an astounding average winning margin of 42.6 points per contest. In contrast, the Philippines limped to a 1-2 record at the end of the group stage as it failed to reach the knockout phase. Cone admitted, that after that 44-point beatdown from the Chinese, he was expecting the eight-time Asian Games champions to reach the final round opposite the Koreans. However, China, bannered by 7-3 giant Yu Jiahao, Wang Junjie and guard Liao Sanning, struggled to get past a scrappy Saudi Arabia side, 87-78 in the quarterfinals. The Chinese reached the semifinal round, but by then, the Japanese crafted a solid game plan to dominate their East Asian counterparts, 97-77 in a massive upset to reach the gold medal round against the Koreans. “I did think China would play them (Koreans) in the Finals.  Japan was impressive and you can never discount Iran.  They are a great defensive team,” shared Cone. If anything, Cone in retrospect, said he wished he brought the Gilas team that played in the recent FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers fourth window in Manila. “Korea was the only team in the Asian Games that brought their entire team from the Windows.  That tells you how important continuity is to international events,” stressed the American mentor, who led the Philippines to the first Asian Games gold medal in 2023, marking the country’s first basketball championship since 1962 in Jakarta. “Needless to say, I wish we could have brought our window team.  It would have continued to give them valuable experience playing together.” Of course, Cone has his own limitations with the Gilas window team, since players like Dwight Ramos, Kevin Quiambao, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo and even Kai Sotto, who has reportedly signed with a Japan B.League team already, are not allowed by their respective Korean and Japanese pro ballclubs from playing in non-FIBA tournaments. Gilas, after the failed Asian Games title-retention bid, is back to the drawing boards for the quadrennial games.  But the national team hopes to come back strong by late November for the next window of the Asian Qualifiers where the Philippines plays Syria and Iran as it continues to pursue a spot in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

MANILA, Philippines — The Imus Yangkee bested the Sarangani 10ACT Marlins, 89-84, on Monday to grab the last ticket to the play-in stage of the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in Malolos. Imus finished with a 4-21 record, good for the 10th spot in the South Division, and will tangle with ninth-ranked Zamboanga Sikat in the play-in involving teams ranked seventh to 10th after the round-robin elimination phase of the two-division, 26-team tournament. The winner between Imus and Zamboanga will then dispute the eighth and last playoff slot with the loser of the other play-in game between seventh-ranked Mindoro and No. 8 Basilan. The winner of the Mindoro-Zamboanga tussle advances outright to the quarterfinal playoffs. Sarangani closed its campaign this year with a 3-22 record. Joseph Marquez, a 6-foot-3 forward out of Our Lady of Fatima University, posted 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Imus and was named the SportsPlus best player. The young Philippine side, composed of players from the UAAP and MPBL, opened its campaign with a 19-12 triumph over Mongolia, one of the established powers in the Asian 3x3 basketball scene. Facing a Mongolian team with a strong reputation in the region, the newly assembled Filipino squad showed little hesitation, controlling the half-court from start to finish.  The Philippines shot an impressive 55 percent from the field despite windy conditions, more than twice Mongolia’s 27 percent, while also winning the rebounding battle, 22-18. Nic Cabanero, who plays for the Binan Tatak Gel in the MPBL, spearheaded the Philippine attack, while UST’s Koji Buenaflor was flawless from the 1-point line, converting all six of his attempts. The Filipinos carried the momentum into their second game, overwhelming Sri Lanka after a slow start to win, 21-12, and complete a perfect opening day. “We just needed to stay composed. ‘Yung defense talaga nagdala sa panalo. Nakita natin, we struggled at the start, but it’s not how you start the game, but how you finish,” said the 6’3” Cabanero. With its defense finally clicking, Gilas needed only seven minutes and 12 seconds to reach the 21-point target, shooting a sizzling 67 percent from the field in an efficient offensive display.  Cabanero again led the charge with eight points and six rebounds, while La Salle forward Manuel Pablo and Buenaflor added six points apiece. Lance Aurigue came alive late to help Lyceum of the Philippines University eke out an 88-87 win against Mapua University for its breakthrough in the NCAA Season 102 on Monday at the PhilSports Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University held off a resilient Mapua University, 88-87, to claim its first victory in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Monday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Lance Aurigue spearheaded the Pirates' breakthrough win with a stellar double-double performance, delivering 21 points and 13 rebounds. With the game on the line in the final minute, Aurigue converted a clutch layup with 1:03 remaining to push Lyceum ahead, 86-85. Following a missed shot by Mapua’s Marcus Igliane, Aurigue drew a foul and calmly sank both free throws to extend the Pirates' lead to 88-85. Mapua drew closer after Cyrus Cuenco was fouled on a three-point attempt. However, Cuenco missed his second free throw, leaving the Cardinals trailing 88-87 and sealing Lyceum's narrow victory. “We remembered our opening day loss, and we were fueled by it, so we were really hungry to take the victory this time,” Aurigue said after the match. “We also wanted to win because this arena holds so many memories for our coach (Gilbert Malabanan), and we didn’t want to taint those memories for him.” Veteran guard Renz Villegas added 17 points to back up Aurigue, while Matthew Rubico chipped in 15 markers for the Pirates. Marc Cuenco led Mapua with 15 points, while Marcus Nitura added 14 in a losing effort. With the victory, Lyceum improved to a 1-1 record, while Mapua remained winless at 0-2.
