Arif Aiman rejects Messi comparison, puts focus on hard work
The JDT winger discussed his approach in a documentary, while teammate Bergson da Silva highlighted his example for academy players.

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) winger Arif Aiman Hanapi has played down comparisons with Lionel Messi, describing himself as an ordinary footballer whose approach centres on discipline and hard work.
The 24-year-old discussed the nickname in a documentary by British YouTube creator Manny, whose real name is Emmanuel Brown. The creator visited Sultan Ibrahim Stadium and JDT's training centre.
Arif laughed off the comparison when Manny brought it up, stressing consistency and passion rather than any resemblance to Messi. He identified dribbling, individual duels and creating goals for teammates as strengths in his game.
JDT striker Bergson da Silva pointed to Arif's progress through the club's academy as an example for younger players. Bergson said the winger had developed from a youngster when he first arrived into an important member of the squad.
As of October 2025, Arif's JDT record stood at 61 goals and 66 assists across 170 appearances, making him the club's top-scoring local player. Club statistics also credited him with eight AFC Champions League Elite goals.
