Bennie Boatwright has sworn allegiance to the Philippines, moving towards eligibility to represent Gilas Pilipinas. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced the development and said processing his Philippine passport was the remaining step.

The forward, 30, plays for the Fujian Sturgeons in the Chinese Basketball Association. He previously represented the San Miguel Beermen as an import. Completing naturalisation would make him eligible for international appearances with Gilas and provide another option for the team's reinforcement spot.

The Philippines sits fifth in Group E of the Asian qualifying competition for the FIBA World Cup, having recorded four wins and four losses. Qualification places go to the first three teams in each group and the best team finishing fourth.

Gilas faces Syria and Iran in the November window at Karisma Arena in Seremban, Malaysia. Syria has a 2-6 record, while Iran stands at 5-3.

Justin Brownlee was absent from the Philippines squad during the previous window. Gilas nevertheless earned home victories over Jordan and Iran.
