Virtual Taekwondo made its debut at Cambodia’s Korean Ambassador’s Cup on November 5, as the country prepares athletes for international competition, including the 34th SEA Games in Malaysia in 2027. The tournament took place at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Centre.

Organisers said the programme offered five categories in the virtual discipline, among them a team performance event. Around 80 athletes representing 10 clubs competed, with age groups extending from under 14 to over 35. Another 200 people, including spectators, attended.

Hang Chuon Naron, Cambodia’s education, youth and sport minister and president of the Cambodian Taekwondo Federation, said the cup was intended to assess athletes’ technical abilities before international events. He described the competition as a success.

South Korean ambassador to Cambodia Kim Chang Yong said Virtual Taekwondo would feature at the SEA Games towards the end of 2027. He said technological innovation was helping the martial art develop as an international sport.

Kim also said South Korea would maintain its support for taekwondo in Cambodia and foster bilateral ties through sporting and cultural exchanges.
