Malaysia’s Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi advanced at the Korea Open in Yeosu after defeating fourth-seeded Chinese pair Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi. The independent men’s doubles partnership won 21-14, 21-19 in 34 minutes against the world No. 11 duo.

Their second-round opponents are Taiwan’s He Jhe Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan, ranked world No. 38. A win would give the Malaysians a quarter-final berth at Super 500 level for the first time as a pair.

Chia and Teo began playing together in April. Their best result remains a semi-final appearance at June’s Macau Open Super 300, while their subsequent World Tour campaigns have ended earlier.

They reached round two at the China Masters, Arctic Open and Denmark Open, but lost their opening matches at both the French Open and Hylo Open. The latest world rankings put them at No. 39, a gain of four places.

Teo, 33, previously spent a decade partnering Ong Yew Sin, with whom he won bronze at the 2021 World Championships. Chia, 26, played alongside Lwi Sheng Hao before teaming up with Teo.
