Chong Wei says badminton changes require difficult choices
The BAM performance committee chairman says he accepts public disagreement and is learning to respond to a different generation of players.

Public opposition will not deter Lee Chong Wei from difficult decisions aimed at improving Malaysian badminton, the former world number one said, describing his work as BA of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman as demanding.
Chong Wei discussed the role on the YouTube podcast “Ngopi Dengan Zafrul”, hosted by BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said changes would inevitably draw disagreement and that he accepted such reactions. He also consults Tengku Zafrul regularly when weighing important decisions.
The three-time Olympic silver medallist said differences between the current players and his own generation required continued learning and adaptation. His involvement with BAM following his retirement in 2019 reflected a wish to repay its support during his almost two decades representing the national team.
He encouraged younger players to appreciate their opportunities and listen to more experienced people. With competitive careers relatively brief, he said athletes needed discipline and sacrifice, including work on fitness and physical strength.
Chong Wei also sought greater corporate participation in Malaysian sport, warning that government funding might not cover its rising financial requirements. He cited sponsorship of teams and athletes in Japan, China and South Korea, saying increased private-sector backing could give Malaysian athletes more resources and opportunities.
