Indonesia intends to begin preparing national training camps for its leading sports in 2026, ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir. Weightlifting, rock climbing, badminton and archery are among the sports being prioritised.

Thohir told a bonus presentation ceremony at the Presidential Palace Complex that President Prabowo Subianto had been briefed on the plans. Starting preparations earlier, instead of waiting until six months before the Olympics, was intended to strengthen athletes’ readiness, he said.

During the ceremony, Prabowo awarded athletes and coaches Rp158.3 billion for medal performances at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games. Of this, Asian Games participants received Rp61.1 billion, while Rp97.2 billion went to the Asian Para Games contingent.

Indonesia’s Asian Games tally was 39 medals, comprising five golds, 11 silvers and 23 bronzes, placing it 16th. The country had targeted four golds. Its Asian Para Games team ranked eighth after collecting 73 medals: 15 golds, 21 silvers and 37 bronzes, against a seven-gold target.

Bonuses for gold medallists were Rp3 billion in individual events, Rp2.4 billion in doubles and Rp1.5 billion in team events. Thohir gave no amounts for athletes who won silver or bronze.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Taufik Hidayat had earlier stressed that developing athletes required preparation over the long term. He said government assistance should encompass training, entry into competitions and other support needed to develop performance.
