Indonesia win FIFA ASEAN Cup as Herdman thanks fans and players
Indonesia defeated Thailand 4-2 on penalties in Jakarta after the final ended 2-2 in normal time.

Coach John Herdman praised Indonesia’s players and supporters after his team claimed the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 title on 5 October. Indonesia overcame Thailand in a penalty shoot-out at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, winning 4-2 after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Herdman thanked fans for their backing throughout the final. He said he was proud of the players’ commitment to one another and their country, and of supporters who stayed behind the team through the last penalty and Emil Audero’s save.
Herdman said his experience of several finals had shown him how difficult those matches could be. He described the championship as a proud moment for Indonesia, whose previous title came with SEA Games gold in 1991, when senior national teams still contested the competition.
Asked how he would celebrate, the English coach said he was tired and wanted a good night’s sleep after delivering the title.
