Yape’s taekwondo victory lifts Philippine Asian Games gold tally to four

Six medals on October 2 brought the Philippine total to 28, its highest Asian Games medal count since 1966.

The Philippines claimed six medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan on October 2, led by Jeus Yape’s gold in mixed virtual taekwondo. The results brought the country to four golds, eight silvers and 16 bronzes, according to GMA News.

It was the Philippine delegation’s biggest medal-winning day of these Games. Its total of 28 medals was also the country’s highest since the 1966 edition in Bangkok, where it earned 42.

Yape’s victory followed his bronze in poomsae. Taekwondo’s contribution reached five medals, with Tachiana Mangin taking silver in the women’s 49kg event and Kurt Barbosa earning silver in the men’s 58kg competition.

In men’s boxing, Olympic silver medallist Carlo Paalam won silver. Annie Ramirez finished with bronze in women’s 52kg jiu-jitsu, while Khylem Progella and Sofiah Pagara of Alas Pilipinas Women secured beach volleyball bronze by beating China.

Philippine medal bids remained in padel, softball, rhythmic gymnastics and golf. Filipino athletes were also set to compete in jiu-jitsu, taekwondo and wrestling. In indoor volleyball, Alas Pilipinas Men were playing for 13th place, while the Rugby 7s team had a classification match still to play.
