Malaysia beat Vietnam to finish third at FIFA ASEAN Cup
Second-half substitute Fergus Tierney scored the only goal, while a Vietnam penalty award was overturned after a VAR review.

Malaysia secured third place at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 with a 1-0 victory over Vietnam at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on 5 October. Fergus Tierney broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute after coming on in the second half.
Tierney received a pass from Manuel Hidalgo, turned past a Vietnamese defender and struck from outside the penalty area to beat goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang. Vietnam had an opportunity to draw level when referee Kyo Hyung Jin awarded a penalty for Ubaidullah Shamsul's challenge on Le Van Do in the 72nd minute, but the decision was reversed following a VAR review.
Neither side scored before the interval. Malaysia goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi denied Ngo Dang Khoa, while Le Giang kept out efforts from Bergson da Silva. Le Giang also saved Harith Haiqal's header from a free kick in the 57th minute.
Vietnam continued to attack in search of an equaliser, but Malaysia's defence held firm. Ubaidullah, Pavithran Gunalan and Syihan helped prevent Vietnam from scoring in the closing stages.
