Indonesia defender Mees Hilgers said he was delighted by his country's FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 triumph, despite being unable to take part while recovering from injury. In comments reported by Voetbalprimeur, he expressed pride in the teammates who had won the trophy.

Indonesia beat Thailand 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the final. The teams had remained level at 2-2 after 120 minutes, with extra time unable to separate them before the match was decided on penalties.

Hilgers said missing the tournament was disappointing because he had wanted to help the team secure a title it had not won for more than 30 years. He nevertheless welcomed his teammates' achievement and described the squad as a strong unit.

The victory gave Indonesia its first title in 35 years. Its previous triumph came at the 1991 SEA Games, when the football competition did not yet have an age restriction.
