Sarawak’s preparations to co-host the 2027 SEA Games include a torch run through its 12 divisions, state minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly on October 20. The Games are scheduled for September 18 to 29, 2027.

Abdul Karim, the minister for youth, sports and entrepreneur development, said promotional activities would continue throughout the state. The torch run is intended to involve communities outside Kuching in the Games.

Sarawak will stage 18 sports from a programme of 43, he said, with dance sport now included among the events assigned to the state.

A ceremony on September 18, 2026 marked the start of the one-year countdown. Abdul Karim said it highlighted preparations and Sarawak’s co-hosting role. An official SEA Games Sarawak website was also launched to carry information and updates for the public and media.

Separately, he said the Sarawak government would reward its 2026 Malaysia Games medallists with RM15,000 for gold, RM5,000 for silver and RM3,000 for bronze. Athletes who broke records would receive an additional RM1,000.
