The University of the Philippines survived a late rally by defending champions De La Salle University to win 80-76 at the Mall of Asia Arena on October 11. The UAAP Season 89 finals rematch ended UP’s run of defeats against NU and FEU.

Noy Remogat finished with 20 points and four rebounds for the Fighting Maroons. Veejay Pre contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists as UP moved to a 3-2 record.

UP led 24-14 after the first quarter and reached halftime ahead 42-28. La Salle made only four field goals during the second period but recovered in the fourth, with Doy Dungo hitting a three-pointer and Jacob Cortez following with two consecutive triples. The Green Archers edged ahead 73-72, their first lead.

Dikachi Ududo made one free throw before Pre’s turnaround jumper from the baseline and a free throw by Elliot Dimaculangan put UP back in front. Mason Amos then missed a potential game-tying three-pointer and fouled James Payosing, who converted both foul shots.

Luis Pablo kept La Salle’s challenge alive with a three-point play, but UP added a final free throw to secure the result.
