University of the Philippines will try to take sole possession of first place in UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball when it meets winless University of the East at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion. The game tips off at 2:30 p.m., with UP, National University and Far Eastern University level at 4-2.

UP enters the contest after beating defending champion La Salle 80-76 and edging Adamson 69-67. Against Adamson, the Fighting Maroons recovered from a second-half deficit that reached 13 points, with captain Rey Remogat helping them secure the victory.

UE has lost 26 consecutive games, most recently falling 71-64 to Adamson. Another defeat would match UP’s 27-game losing run across Seasons 75 to 77, from 2012-2014, the second-longest in the competition’s history. Adamson holds the record with 35 successive defeats from 1999 to 2002.

UP assistant coach Christian Luanzon cautioned against complacency, while Remogat, a former UE player, said the team needed to bring its preparation into every game regardless of the opponent. UE is led by interim coach Paulo Hubalde.

In the other men’s fixture, University of Santo Tomas faces Ateneo at 6 p.m. Both teams have 3-3 records.
