Vietnam’s Asian Games campaign in Japan ended with three gold medals, below its goal of four. The country also collected three silver medals and 19 bronzes, bringing its tally to 25.

The country fielded 348 athletes. Its gold-winning performances came from sepak takraw and karate, in disciplines where Vietnam had also earned gold at the preceding Asian Games.

Nguyen Thi My Trang’s defeat in a women’s 57kg wrestling bronze-medal contest ended Vietnam’s remaining chance of a medal. Equestrian events are scheduled for the final day, but no Vietnamese athletes are entered.

Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang earned silver in virtual reality taekwondo. Victories over opponents representing South Korea, Thailand and Singapore took her into the final, where a Filipino competitor defeated her.

The shooting team managed one bronze. At the 19th Asian Games, it had earned a medal of each colour. Trinh Thu Vinh and Pham Quang Huy finished without individual medals at this edition.

Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya are hosting the 20th Asian Games from September 19 to October 4. The programme covers more than 40 sports, with over 11,000 competitors drawn from 45 countries and regions.
