A 0-1 loss to Malaysia left Vietnam in fourth place in Group 1 at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The defeat also ended a sequence of Vietnamese victories against Malaysia that had lasted more than a decade.

Fergus Tierney provided the breakthrough after the interval, collecting the ball close to the box and turning before sending his shot between Viet Anh's legs and past goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik. Vietnam were given a penalty in the 73rd minute, only for the referee to reverse the call following a VAR check that deemed Harith Haiqal's tackle legitimate.

The opening half produced no goals. Hai Long missed with an early attempt and later saw his free kick saved. Malaysia also threatened when Hoang Duc's misplaced pass allowed Bergson to shoot from distance, drawing a stop from Le Giang Patrik.

Vietnam stepped up their attacks after the break, but Minh Hoang could not trouble Malaysia with a header and subsequently shot wide. Coach Kim Sang Sik used Dinh Bac, Van Do, Minh Khoa, Xuan Manh and Tuan Tai as second-half substitutes, without finding a way to level the score.
