Dean James scores first Indonesia goal in FIFA ASEAN Cup final win

The substitute defender put Indonesia ahead against Thailand before the final went to penalties at Gelora Bung Karno.

Dean James marked his first goal for Indonesia with a title victory, scoring against Thailand in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final on 5 October. Indonesia won the match, which was decided by a penalty shootout at Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno.

The Go Ahead Eagles defender came off the bench and scored in the second half to give Indonesia a 1-0 lead. Neither side was able to settle the contest before penalties, with Indonesia ultimately taking the tournament title.

In comments quoted by FIFA, James said he was delighted to have opened his scoring account for the national team in a final. He also expressed happiness that Indonesia had gone on to win.

James described playing in front of tens of thousands of Indonesian supporters as a memorable experience. He said the atmosphere was difficult to put into words and that he was very happy to have played there.
