Indonesia beats Thailand on penalties to win FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026

President Prabowo Subianto praised Indonesia’s persistence after the team recovered from an extra-time deficit in the Jakarta final.

Indonesia claimed the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 title with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Thailand at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno stadium on 5 October. President Prabowo Subianto described the win as historic and expressed pride in the team.

Thailand had been playing with 10 men since the 81st minute when Dean James put Indonesia ahead in the 84th minute. Iklas Sanron brought Thailand level in the 86th minute, sending the match into extra time.

Peeradol Chamraratsame scored in the 111th minute to give Thailand a 2-1 lead. Indonesia responded through Elkan Baggott in the 114th minute, taking the final to a shootout.

Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott and Shayne Pattynama all converted their penalties for Indonesia. Thailand’s Sarach Yooyen and Nattaphon Sayriya failed to score their attempts.

Speaking after the final, Prabowo said he was happy and grateful for the victory, praising the players for continuing to fight until the closing moments. He then joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino in presenting the tournament trophy to Indonesia captain Kevin Diks.
