Indonesia secured the first ASEAN Cup title on Oct 5, defeating Thailand in a penalty shootout at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. The final finished 2-2 after extra time before the hosts prevailed 4-2 on spot kicks.

Thailand played with 10 men after defender Nicholas Mickelson received his second yellow card in the 81st minute. His two bookings came within five minutes. Indonesia scored from the resulting free kick, but substitute Iklas Sanron then equalised for Thailand.

Thailand went ahead in the 111th minute of extra time, only for Elkan Baggott to bring Indonesia level five minutes later. In the shootout, Thailand missed one attempt and Indonesia goalkeeper Emil Audero saved another.

President Prabowo Subianto and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were present as Indonesia won the trophy on home ground.

Indonesia and Thailand will also compete at the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, alongside fellow ASEAN representatives Singapore and Vietnam. That tournament is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
