Philippine teenager Ericka Ordizo defeated Vietnam’s Woman Grandmaster Hoang Thi Bao in 37 moves to remain joint leader at the seventh ASEAN+ Individual Women’s Chess Championships. Seven players had the maximum two points after two rounds of the nine-round tournament.

Ordizo, an 18-year-old Far Eastern University freshman from Alaminos, Pangasinan, overcame Hoang’s Slav Defence. The 39-year-old Vietnamese former national champion and former Olympiad Board 1 player resigned while three pawns behind in a losing position.

The result followed Ordizo’s opening-round victory over Philippine Olympiad veteran and Woman International Master Bernadette Galas. Ordizo entered the competition among its youngest participants and those with the lowest ratings.

Fellow Philippine contender WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego also won both her opening games, beating WGM Janelle Mae Frayna and then WIM Ruelle Canino. Ordizo and the 27-year-old San Diego are competing for the direct WGM title awarded to the eventual tournament winner.

The other players on two points were India’s WIM Bordoloi Pratitee and WFM Shree Reddy Keerti, Vietnam’s WGM Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and WIM Nguyen Hong Anh, and Singapore’s Woman FIDE Master Fang Kun.
